Work on Lake Delton's County Highway A begins Monday

Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a $3.63 million contract for the reconstruction of County Highway A in Lake Delton where the man-made lake breached the roadway during heavy rains and floods in June.

Waters formed a new channel between Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River that was 700 feet long, 370 feet wide and about 30 feet deep, Department of Transportation officials said.

That gap was plugged earlier by the construction of a $1.8 million cofferdam across the breach, and work on rebuilding and fortifying the road embankment and the highway will begin on Sept. 8.

Hoffman Construction of Black River Falls will be the prime contractor for the project. Hoffman earlier this year was the company who quickly built crossover lanes on Interstate 94 near Johnson Creek and Lake Mills when floodwaters made the westbound lanes impassable.

In announcing the contract, DOT said it is expected that 80 percent of the $3.63 million cost will be covered by federal government emergency relief funds, with 20 percent of the project's cost covered by the state.

Officials hope the 270-acre lake will be filled next year.
