Gasoline prices in Wisconsin continue to plummet, possibly heading down to the $3-a-gallon mark some time this week.
One station in Belleville in far southern Dane County was already under the $3 mark, selling regular unleaded gas at $2.89 a gallon, but most of the lower-priced stations in the Madison area had regular unleaded between $3.12 and $3.15 a gallon, according to madisongasprices.com Monday.
The AAA daily fuel gauge report showed regular unleaded in Wisconsin selling for an average $3.142 a gallon Monday, down 6.7 cents from Sunday and 67 cents lower than a month ago.
The Milwaukee metro area has the lowest average price for regular unleaded in the state at $3.051 a gallon, down 7.8 cents from Sunday, while Madison drivers are paying the most for regular unleaded at an average $3.256 a gallon, down 5.9 cents from Sunday.
Madisongasprices.com said the highest price in the area was $3.49 a gallon at a station on University Avenue, but the range for higher-priced gas was more in the $3.29- to $3.37-a-gallon range.
The national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.206 a gallon, down 4.1 cents from Sunday.
Seven states now have averages under $3 a gallon for regular unleaded, with Oklahoma leading the way in low prices at an average $2.747 a gallon. Other states where gas averages are under $3 are Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio.
The low-priced leader still is Springfield, Mo., where drivers are only paying $2.56 a gallon for regular unleaded, a price that's getting down to where gasoline was at ($2.49 a gallon) a year ago in Springfield.
