Rick Lange, USDA-NRCS district conservationist, said he sees more and more landowners interested in improving their land. He notes that there is some help available from agencies and organizations.
Landowners are often encouraged to complete an inventory of species on the land, and then develop a management plan. Sometimes financial assistance is available through the DNR's Landowner Incentive Program (LIP), the federal Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) and the Mississippi Valley Conservancy.
The LIP grant is funded through the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, though there is doubt whether funding will continue in the next federal budget. Information is available at: www.dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/wlip/index.htm. Or contact Darcy Kind at 608-266-8736. Or e-mail her at: wlip@dnr.state.wi.us.
