Kevin Lynch -- culture reporter

The Capital Times  —  4/25/2008 12:37 pm

Kevin Lynch, a sculptor by training, has made covering the local arts scene for almost 19 years with The Capital Times into his own art form. He's been reporter, writer, reviewer, Rhythm columnist; always up to the challenge of "capturing the vitality and diversity of Madison's culture," as he puts it.

Kevin has covered everything from the burgeoning Latin music and club scene, to health care and insurance problems that artists face, to looking at young singer-songwriters. When you turn to the Lifestyle cover on Friday, looking for ideas for the weekend, it's likely that Kevin has also been the source of those "Best Bets."

Kevin won a Milwaukee Press Club award for a comparative book review of two espionage novels, so it's not surprising that he's working on a novel with more than a hint of mystery. He's also putting finishing touches on a non-fiction book: "Voices in the River: The Jazz Message to Democracy" about the connections between jazz and democracy.

Most readers don't know that Kevin continued to quietly follow his arts and music beat and turn out stories even after being afflicted a few years ago with a rare nerve condition that affected his shoulders, arms and hands and made typing difficult.

He plans to return to school to pursue a doctorate in English/American Studies, teach and write.
