David Sandell's roots at The Capital Times go deeper than any other current staff member. He started here on June 15, 1959 -- just shy of 49 years ago. He was not quite 20 years old at the time.
For almost half a century, he has helped chronicle life in the Madison area, whether it be photos of visiting dignitaries, action on the football field or a child fascinated by animals at the zoo. In the process, he has been an ambassador of good will for The Capital Times in so many corners of this community.
As the senior staff member, Sandell has also been a recounter of many of the Cap Times newsroom legends. After all, he worked with a whole host of characters within these walls, ranging from the founder of the paper, William T. Evjue, to young reporters who came and went in the blink of an eye.
He swallowed his share of tear gas during the campus riots of the 1960s, jostled with the national media during the presidential campaign appearances of the 1970s, dodged football players tumbling off the field at Camp Randall in the 1980s, caught the drama of a huge fire at Central Storage Warehouse in the early 1990s, captured the tragedies of murders and the sadness at funerals across many decades.
Through it all, Dave maintained close bonds of friendship with so many of his colleagues, offering words of encouragement and always, another story that brought smiles to faces.
