The name Roger Daleiden is probably unfamiliar to Capital Times readers, yet for almost six years his work has appeared on these pages on a daily basis. And while he's never written a byline story or researched an in-depth investigation, his efforts in producing The Capital Times rank high in importance to readers.
Roger's careful eye looks at almost every photo that appears on these pages, making sure the color is correctly balanced to reproduce well on our presses, the photo resolution correct and the image size adjusted to fit the paper's news hole. Does a photo have too much red in it? Too little yellow? Roger can, and does, change all that.
But his job involves more than just preparing the photos for publication. He's largely been responsible for the maps that appear on these pages and many of the charts and graphs. And when he's not working on one of the graphics, he's probably designing a beautiful cover for the Lifestyle section.
While all of these jobs will continue with the new Capital Times, missing will be Roger and his two most distinguished qualities -- the patience he displayed with his co-workers, and his cheerfulness.
Roger seldom raised his voice, he never chided an individual for asking the same question time and time again and he calmly listened and tried to respond to all requests. He maintains that quality came, in part, from prior teaching experience. If so, we benefited.
The other quality we'll miss is his cheerfulness. Every morning, rain or shine, he'd show up with a pleasant "good morning." And every afternoon, regardless of how bad your day or his was, you could count on him to say, "Have a pleasant evening" as he left the newsroom. Not a bad way to be remembered.
