Shauna Rhone came to the Cap Times with a wonderful array of newspaper experience -- she had worked both as a reporter and in the new online worlds of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Cincinnati Enquirer and had won awards for her work. So the Cap Times was very lucky that she chose to join us as our Web editor in 2004.
She not only maintained the day-to-day stories and photos on the site, but quickly worked as a Web diplomat, helping build relationships between the newsroom and the tech staff at madison.com, and helping our reporters get more comfortable with writing online news. She worked with our photo staff to develop very popular photo shows on the Web site.
As the Web staff in our newsroom grew, they were able to build upon the work Shauna had done. She, in turn, moved more deeply into the news operation of the paper, taking on the temporary role of assistant city editor earlier this year when Lee Sensenbrenner left that job to take a media position on Gov. Jim Doyle's staff.
Shauna had impact outside the newsroom as well. She has been active in helping to plan the Race and Media forums that have tried to bridge the gap between the mainstream news media and the communities of color in the Madison area. She has served as a mentor for students from the Simpson Street Free Press who worked in our newsroom as part of the Summer Media Institute, and she has given presentations at national journalism training programs.
Through it all, Shauna has built strong relationships with many members of our staff, lending both her professional expertise and her personal compassion to her colleagues.
