Several area students did well in the Wisconsin Historical Society's annual History Day competition held recently at the Wisconsin Union Theater.
The History Day event is part of a national contest that will culminate June 15-19 at the University of Maryland. Students make presentations about papers, exhibits, documentaries or other categories in which they explore a facet of state or local, state or national history.
Several Eagle School students from Madison were named national finalists at the state contest. They included Hannah O'Dea and Carolyn Raihala with their junior individual exhibits; Sophie Gerdes and Sonia Urquidi in the junior group performances category; Nate Smith and Jeffrey Zhao for their junior individual documentaries; and Eli Fessler for her junior Web site.
Alexandra Cohn and David Aeschlimann of Madison West will go on to the national competition for their senior group documentary on the Sterling Hall bombing. Joanna Weng, a student at Velma Hamilton Middle School in Madison, is a national finalist for her junior Web site, and Amanda Snodgrass of Mount Horeb High School will go on to the nationals for her senior paper on the Cuban missile crisis.
Other area winners include Laura Bunn of the Eagle School, honorable mention in junior individual exhibit; Lisa Moehlman and Melissa Merklein of Mount Horeb, honorable mention in senior group exhibit; and Chelsey Eley of Waunakee High School, honorable mention for senior group documentary.
