Charles Rayford of Madison was charged Tuesday with second degree endangering safety for allegedly threatening his former girlfriend, pregnant with his child, with a large knife.

The victim told police she was walking toward her apartment building on Old Middleton Road with her 5-year-old son in tow when she saw Rayford, who appeared to be holding the door to the building open for her.

But Rayford suddenly brought his left hand up, holding a knife with a 12-inch blade. "He made jabbing motions at her, which would have connected with her had she not quickly backed away," the criminal complaint against Rayford says.

Rayford said, "I'm going to kill you," adding an expletive, repeated that threat, then said, "I'm going to creep behind you and kill you," the complaint says.

The victim said she and Rayford broke up about a month ago. She said the incident occurred Sunday morning when she returned back to her residence from taking her new boyfriend home.

Rayford could face prison and extended supervision time of up to 10 years if convicted.
