High school students urged to join youth leadership group

Dane County high school students can help their communities invest in youth -- while investing in themselves -- by joining By Youth for Youth.

Participants in the program direct more than $30,000 in funding to youth group projects that benefit other youth.

It's a way to learn about local issues and develop skills, says Angelica Medina, a Verona High School senior entering her third year with the program.

"I really like it. It allows me to use my leadership skills. And it's nice knowing you made a difference," said Medina, 17.

Participants consider and make recommendations for funding for projects designed by county youth.

High school students from all over Dane County are encouraged to participate in the program, sponsored by United Way of Dane County, Dane County Youth Commission, the city of Madison and Oscar Mayer/Kraft.

Last year, BYFY members allocated funds to 17 projects, including the Sun Prairie Mural in Angell Park, and programs at Mt. Horeb Recreation Center and Kennedy Heights Community Center. Past projects funded included ones to increase public awareness of environmental issues, encourage smart sexual behavior among youths and promote teamwork through dance.

BYFY Committee meetings are held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, mid-October through April.

"Most kids don't know about it," Medina said of BYFY. "It really is a good deal."
