A fire in the town of Madison on Saturday night caused about $30,000 damage. No residents or firefighters were injured, but two cats died.
The first firefighting units to arrive at 402 Alhambra Place at 9:42 p.m. found heavy fire and smoke in one unit of the two-story, four-unit apartment building.
The fire was under control in about 15 minutes. Fire damage was confined to that apartment, but heat and smoke damaged the other three apartments as well.
The resident of the unit where the fire started was not home at the time, and the other residents left the building safely.
The Red Cross provided temporary housing for residents of two units that were not habitable.
The Fitchburg Fire Department and FitchRona EMS assisted town of Madison firefighters in responding to the fire.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
