For the first time in recent memory, gas is under $3 a gallon in parts of the United States, continuing the pricing nose dive that started a little more than a month ago.

The closest area where regular unleaded is under $3 is right across the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa, but if you drive down into Missouri, you'll find the lowest prices in the nation in Springfield, where regular unleaded has fallen to an average $2.81 a gallon, according to the daily fuel gauge report from AAA.

In Oklahoma, the state average has dropped below $3 a gallon to $2.98, the first state in the country to have its average price for regular unleaded drop below $3 during this gas price free fall.

Minnesotans are paying an average $3.13 a gallon for regular unleaded, with St. Cloud stations selling it for about $3.

The lowest price in Wisconsin is in Eau Claire at an average $3.315 a gallon, down 7.1 cents from Wednesday, followed by Milwaukee at $3.328, La Crosse at $3.33, Green Bay at $3.423, Janesville at $3.443 and Madison at $3.48.

Regular unleaded can be found for $3.39 a gallon at several stations in the Madison area, according to madisongasprices.com, with many stations selling regular unleaded at $3.42 or $3.43.

The Wisconsin average for regular unleaded dropped 5.1 cents to $3.393 a gallon, a cent below the national average of $3.403 a gallon.

In Illinois, cheap gas can be found downstate in Danville and Peoria ($3.22) while the highest prices are in the Chicago area ($3.71).

Travelers to Michigan will find the cheapest gas in the Detroit area ($3.26) while the most expensive is in the Upper Peninsula in Marquette ($3.58).
