A man who reportedly went door to door claiming he needed to check expiration dates on medicine has been arrested for fraud.

John Voelz, 41, Madison, was arrested April 29 and tentatively charged with obtaining/possession of a controlled substance by fraud and a probation violation.

According to Madison police, Voelz went door to door to about 10 apartments at the Oakwood Village retirement community center, 6205 Mineral Point Road, claiming he worked for a pharmacy and needed to check residents' medicines, with several residents letting him into their apartments.

One resident said a bottle of Hydrocodone was missing, and staff at Oakwood Village was notified of the man on the grounds. Hydrocodone is a controlled substance prescription drug used for cough suppression and pain relief.

"When approached, he said he was looking for an apartment but gave an address that did not exist," said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "Staff followed the suspect at a safe distance and provided information that led to his arrest."
