Drive on East Wash turns into cash cow

A Madison man encountered some paper blowing in the street as he drove on East Washington earlier this week. The paper turned out to be cold, hard cash -- hundreds of dollars worth.

Terry Gerrits pulled over and secured a bag of money, some of which was blowing around in the mid-afternoon breeze. He immediately called police. Gerrits said that while he waited for police to arrive, random people began to stop and claim the cash belonged to them.

According to Madison Police, one person stopped and told Gerrits, "I lost my money."

Instead of handing over the cash, Gerrits told the person to wait for police. The person suddenly lost interest in the dough and drove away.

Another vehicle stopped, and a female gathered up some of the bills still blowing around the sidewalk.

Police collected almost $900 when they arrived.

In a statement released Thursday, police commended Gerrits for being a "good Samaritan."
