A Cross Plains Police officer escaped injury Sunday night, but his squad car suffered heavy damage in a crash during the pursuit of a high-speed motorcyclist.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said a deputy tried to stop a black-and-yellow sport-type motorcycle speeding and passing in a no passing zone on U.S. 14 near Stagecoach Road.

"Rather than start a pursuit," the Sheriff's Office said, "the deputy used his radio to alert the Cross Plains Police," that the speeding biker was heading into the village.

Seconds later the Cross Plains officer saw the motorcyclist coming into the village on U.S. 14, then turned north on Brewery Road.

The motorcyclist ran two stops signs and kept speeding northbound on Highway P, the Sheriff's office said.

While chasing the cyclist, the Cross Plains officer lost control of his squad car and crashed into concrete barriers at the corner of Church and Thinnes streets.

The motorcyclist was last seen headed east on Airport Road and anyone with information on the driver or the motorcycle is asked to call the Cross Plains Police at (608) 798-4100.
