Road update: I-39 northbound near Portage open

The Capital Times  —  6/19/2008 12:59 pm

After being closed due to last week's storms and flooding, the northbound lanes of Interstate 39 in Columbia County are now open from the I-90/94 interchange.

All I-39 southbound lanes in the Portage area remain closed, however, as do northbound ramps to Wisconsin 33 and Cascade Mountain and the entire I-39/Wisconsin 33 interchange. The exit ramp from I-39 to U.S. 51 is also closed, and speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph in the area.

Travelers on Interstate 94 should expect delays as the state begins construction of emergency crossover lanes near Johnson Creek.

Interstate 94 eastbound is restricted to one lane between County Q near Lake Mills and the Rock River near Johnson Creek, but a 27-mile stretch of westbound I-94 from Milwaukee remains closed from Wisconsin 83 in Delafield west to Wisconsin 89 in Lake Mills. The state's posted detour takes travelers down Wisconsin 83 and I-43 to Beloit, then up I-90/39 to Madison.

The crossover project will convert eastbound lanes to two-way traffic to accommodate both eastbound and westbound drivers. The new lanes will be located east of the Rock River near Johnson Creek and west of the Crawfish River near Lake Mills. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

All lanes of I-90/94 west of Madison are open, but exits to Wisconsin 33 remain closed.
