A 12-year-old Madison boy is in trouble with the law because of his penchant for calling 911 just to see the squad cars drive by with their lights on.
Madison police said the boy could be cited for misuse of 911 and a curfew violation after making 16 fake 911 calls the night of June 30, including one call involving a woman being chased by a knife-wielding man.
When police responded to the man-chasing-woman call in the 3000 block of East Washington Avenue, they didn't find a suspect or victim, but did find the boy, who was carrying a cell phone, which he'd been using to dial 911.
"Most were hang-up calls, but an officer still has to investigate," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
The boy admitted his involvement in making the calls.
"He said, 'It was fun to see all the police drive by with their lights on. I like it.'" DeSpain said.
The boy was taken home and released to his parents.
A follow-up investigation is being conducted, DeSpain said, and the boy most likely will be cited.
