Gas prices coming down

A sharp drop in oil prices the past 10 days is starting to show up at the local fuel pump.

Madisonians found regular unleaded for $3.89 a gallon at many stations in the area Wednesday morning, down almost 20 cents a gallon from the record average high of $4.08 set only a week ago.

The average price for regular unleaded in Madison Wednesday is $3.956 a gallon, according to the daily fuel gauge report from AAA, but more than a dozen stations were showing the $3.89-a-gallon price on madisongasprices.com.

Oil dropped below $127 a barrel Tuesday, down $20 a barrel from the record $147 a barrel on July 11.

Gas is coming down all across the state.

The lowest average for regular unleaded is in the Green Bay metro area at $3.95 a gallon, down over 10 cents a gallon in the past six days, while Eau Claire motorists are paying the most at $4.073 a gallon after setting a record high at $4.099 a gallon on Tuesday.

For the first time in recent weeks, Milwaukee's average for regular unleaded dropped below $4 a gallon at $3.98, more than 22 cents below the record $4.201 set on July 16.

The Wisconsin average is $3.985 a gallon for regular unleaded, down 12.9 cents from the record $4.114 a gallon set on July 17.

Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded is $4.042 a gallon, down 7.2 cents from the record $4.114 a gallon set on July 17.

Travelers heading to Minnesota will find the lowest average price for regular unleaded in the region at $3.851 a gallon, while the average is $3.934 a gallon in Iowa, $4.03 a gallon in Michigan and $4.141 a gallon in Illinois.

The lowest average price for regular unleaded is in Oklahoma at $3.814 a gallon while the highest is in Alaska at $4.689 a gallon.

Diesel users in Hawaii are paying through the nose for their fuel of choice, almost $5.40 a gallon, or 92 cents a gallon higher than the price of a gallon of regular unleaded in America's 50th state.
