Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Kitty Brennan has been appointed to the State Court of Appeals to fill the vacancy in District 1 created by the death in July of longtime Appeals Court Judge Ted Wedemeyer.
Brennan was appointed to the post Thursday by Gov. Jim Doyle and will begin her service on Sept. 8.
Brennan will serve a term ending next July 31, when Wedemeyer's term would expire, and if she chooses to stay on the appeals bench past then she must run for the post next Spring.
"Judge Kitty Brennan is an outstanding judge and a well-respected member of the legal community," Doyle said in making the appointment. "Her experience on the bench will serve her well in this new role."
Brennan has served for more than 14 years on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, including three as chief judge. Before her election to the court, she worked in private practice and as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County.
Brennan is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin law school and she and her husband, Joseph Murphy, reside in South Milwaukee and have four adult children.
Wedemeyer, 75, was a longtime judge on the appeals court who died July 23, five months after being diagnosed with cancer. Wedemeyer served as a Municipal Judge in Milwaukee from 1975 to 1978, then served as a Circuit Court judge in Milwaukee from 1988 until 1991, when he began his service in the Court of Appeals.
