More families are expected to stay home in Wisconsin this Labor Day holiday, according to the AAA. In the Great Lakes region, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, 5.1 million people are projected to travel this weekend, a 0.8 percent decrease from a year ago. About 4.5 million of those travelers will hit the road and another 400,000 will travel by air.
"High gas and food prices, the credit crunch, and other economic factors are affecting many families," said AAA Wisconsin Regional President Tom Frymark. "As a result, fewer people will travel for the Labor Day holiday."
The average price Sunday for a gallon of unleaded regular gas in Wisconsin is $3.77, according to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report in the state. That figure is 21 cents lower than a month ago but a painful 82 cents higher than a year ago. Madison's average gas price is almost 10 cents fewer ($3.68) than the state average. Travelers headed to the Milwaukee area, where the pump registers at $3.84 per gallon, will feel the pinch the most.
