Duplex damaged in fire

The Capital Times  —  8/28/2008 7:35 am

Residents living in a duplex on Madison's southwest side scrambled to safety early Thursday morning after a smoky fire broke out in the basement of one of the residences.

Thirteen occupants of the duplex at 6520 Tottenham Road evacuated safely after hearing smoke detectors going off, with some of the occupants pounding on the door at 6518 Tottenham Road to alert the five occupants inside of the fire, with those residents able to get out safely as well.

Madison Fire Department firefighters saw smoke coming out of the eaves of the duplex when arriving on the scene at 2:50 a.m. Thursday. Residents said the fire was in the basement, so firefighters entered and quickly put out the blaze.

Damage was estimated to be about $10,000.

The Badger Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the displaced residents with finding temporary housing. The fire remains under investigation.
