Five people have submitted their names for consideration to be appointed to succeed Seventh District Alder Zach Brandon, who resigned when he was appointed to a job with the State Department of Commerce.
The list to represent the district, located in the southwest corner of the city, includes Elizabeth "Libby" Monson, who served on the City Council from what is now the Seventh District in 1981-83. She has lived in Madison for more than 35 years and is a real estate broker who lives at 7130 Maple Point Drive.
Also applying were: Aric Vander Werff, of 6814 Stratford Drive, a staff sergeant with the Wisconsin Air National Guard where he is an avionics technician.
Longtime civil rights and community activist Deborah Ann Speckmann, of 6823 Raymond Road.
Vicki Bankston, of 7140 East Pass, a technical and educational consultant who currently serves on the Madison Development Corporation Board of Directors and the Dane County Equal Opportunity Commission.
J. Steven King, of 6948 Country Lane, who currently is manager of learning and development at Meriter Hospital.
The Common Council Organizational Committee will review resumes of the candidates and interview them at a meeting Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. in the City-County Building and will make a recommendation to the Common Council for action at the Sept. 16 meeting.
The person selected will then serve out the remainder of Brandon's term, and could run for election in the April 7, 2009, election.
Brandon plans to resign from the Council when his replacement is selected, or by Oct. 8, whichever is sooner, he previously said.
