Local law enforcement officials might have cleared up a half-dozen bank robberies Tuesday with the arrest of a man who just robbed Anchor Bank on Madison's far west side.
John B. Kowal, 23, Madison, was tentatively charged with six counts of robbery stemming from a string of area bank heists in Middleton, Madison and Monona.
Kowal was captured after an Anchor Bank customer followed him out of the bank and provided information to responding officers, who were able to pick up his trail to make an arrest after a brief chase on foot.
The bank is at 333 S. Westfield Road, just north of Mineral Point Road.
Kowal is a suspect in bank robberies Aug. 14 and May 7 at the State Bank of Cross Plains, 6300 University, Middleton; April 11 at the State Bank of Cross Plains, 8301 University, Middleton; March 19 at Amcore Bank, 6698 Odana Rd., Madison and June 17 at the M&I Bank in Monona.
The cases will be prosecuted in federal court since bank robbery is a federal offense.
Police departments from the three cities have been working with the FBI on the case, said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
