Statewide gas prices drop below $2 a gallon

Prices on regular unleaded gasoline in Wisconsin are now averaging less than $2 a gallon, according to the daily fuel gauge report from AAA.

Friday's statewide average price is $1.969 a gallon, down 3.5 cents from Thursday and $1.14 below the price a year ago.

The national average price for regular unleaded also dropped below $2 a gallon, coming down 3.1 cents on Friday to $1.989 a gallon.

In Wisconsin, the lowest price for regular unleaded is in Milwaukee at $1.935 a gallon, followed by Green Bay at $1.942, Madison at $1.964, Janesville at $1.978, La Crosse at $1.998 and Eau Claire at $2.028.

In Madison, the low price for regular unleaded is $1.89 a gallon at a station in Middleton, with most lower-priced fuel locally in the $1.90-$1.93 a gallon range, according to madisongasprices.com.

The high price is $2.05 a gallon at a station on the east side, with most higher-priced stations selling the fuel at $1.99 a gallon.

Nationally, 30 states now have regular unleaded selling for an average less than $2 a gallon, and only one state, Alaska, still has the fuel at more than $3 a gallon.

The lowest statewide average price is in Missouri at $1.69 a gallon, which also has the lowest metro average price in Kansas City, where the fuel is selling for $1.577 a gallon.

Illinois is the only Midwest state "holdout" for regular unleaded staying above $2 a gallon at $2.003, with Ohio now at $1.791, Indiana at $1.814, Minnesota at $1.839, Michigan at $1.851 and Iowa at $1.886.

Holiday shoppers heading to Chicago this weekend will find regular unleaded selling for an average of $2.114 a gallon, while those headed to Minneapolis-St. Paul can fill up in the Twin Cities at an average price of $1.782 a gallon.
