Middleton cops probe heroin death

Middleton police are investigating the Nov. 20 death of a 25-year-old man who died after sniffing heroin, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

Jason Swanson died after he and his girlfriend bought heroin from a man who police have identified, according to a search warrant complaint filed in court Tuesday.

The search warrant was to obtain phone records in hopes of linking the man to the sale of heroin. In Wisconsin it is considered to be first-degree reckless homicide to sell or give drugs to a person who subsequently dies after using them.

Swanson fell asleep after using the heroin, and when his lips began to turn blue later he was covered with blankets, but by the afternoon of Nov. 20 he was unresponsive, and paramedics were called. He was dead when they arrived.

According to a published obituary, Swanson "had a big heart, infectious smile and sparkly blue eyes. He was mischievous, lovable and he had a great sense of humor."

Several others have been prosecuted in recent years in Dane County for providing drugs that resulted in death.
