Patrick Cudahy recalls bacon bits

The Capital Times  —  1/03/2009 9:57 pm

Patrick Cudahy recalled 3,590 pounds of bacon bits products that might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Saturday.

The bacteria can cause a rare but potentially fatal disease to which infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are susceptible. Ten-pound cases of Golden Crisp and John Morrell applewood smoked precooked bacon toppings marked with "8318" are being recalled. They were produced in Cudahy, Wis., in November and distributed to restaurants and institutions in Wisconsin and five other states.

The problem was discovered by in-house testing from an establishment that received the product; no reports of illness associated with consumption of the product were received.

Consumers with questions can call 414-744-2000.
