Air conditioners will be getting a workout this week as heat and humidity dominates the weather in southern Wisconsin.
High temperatures in the mid to upper 80s are in the forecast all week, with the thermometer possibly hitting 92 degrees on Saturday, according to Weather Central meteorologist Brian Olson.
The heat index, or "apparent temperature," could reach near 90 Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, and into the low 90s in the southern tier of counties from Lafayette to Racine and Kenosha.
(The heat index is essentially the opposite of the wind chill factor. The temperature might be 86 but with high humidity it feels like 90.)
The high humidity also produce foggy driving conditions. Motorists should watch for patches of dense fog early Monday morning, especially in the Wisconsin River valley.
The heat and humidity isn't expected to produce much precipitation this week.
The National Weather Service said there's a 30 percent chance of rain Monday night and Tuesday night and a 40 percent chance during the day on Tuesday, and a few storms might pop up Thursday night into Friday morning.
Sunday's high in Madison was 83 degrees, one degree above normal and 17 degrees below the record 100 degrees for July 27 set in 1955.
No precipitation was recorded at Dane County Regional Airport, so the monthly total stayed at 5.58 inches, 2.17 inches above normal through July 27.
