The Veterans for Peace
organization has once again put up its memorial mile, in which it
seeks to draw attention to all of the Americans killed in the wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For Veterans Day Tuesday and until late in
the week, some 4,800 cardboard replicas of tombstones have been
placed on the edge of Speedway Road along Forest Hill Cemetery to
mark the loss of lives in the past years.
The display is chronological and is interposed with years marking the dates of deaths. The symbolic tombstones also have a small Wisconsin flag attached to those representing the 96 Wisconsin residents that died -- from the first on May 19, 2003, to the most recent, on July 20, 2008. The display is similar to that put up at Olbrich Park on the east side last spring to mark Memorial Day.
