Bonnie Block: Go out to eat, save a life

Letter to the editor  —  5/07/2008 5:17 am

Dear Editor: Land mines are not something we think about in the U.S. But in 80 countries of the world, people have to think about these dangerous relics of war -- 70 million land mines lay buried and every 90 minutes someone is killed or maimed by an exploding land mine. About one-third of the victims are children and 90 percent are civilians. There are almost half a million survivors with special needs.

Whatever our feelings about war, it seems we should be able to agree that clearing land mines and supporting survivors is the right thing to do. That is why the Dane County chapter of the United Nations Association is raising money for the Adopt-A-Minefield program of the UNA-USA. We need your help.

We invite the community to participate in a "go out to eat, save lives" endeavor. Here's how it will work: On the designated day and time, diners can order from the menu or choose from a buffet at the four restaurants listed below. They will pay the usual amount for food and the restaurant will contribute a percentage of their proceeds to AAM. In addition, UNA members will be available to provide more information and to accept personal contributions of any amount. (Checks should be made payable to AAM.)

These are the times, dates and places:

1) Wednesday, May 7, 5-10 p.m. at La Mestiza Restaurant, 6644 Odana Road.

2) Thursday, May 8, 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 5-8:30 p.m. at The Dardanelles, 1851 Monroe St.

3) Wednesday, May 14, 5-9 p.m. at Taste of Asia (buffet), 2817 E. Washington Ave.

4) Thursday, May 15, at noon at Maharani Indian Restaurant (buffet), 380 W. Washington Ave.

For details or to contribute online go to www.una-usadanecounty.org or call 256-5088.
