Dear Editor: As a volunteer and later a graduate student involved in the rebuilding of New Orleans, I would like to applaud the efforts of the Madison community in the recovery of the Gulf Coast. For over 2 years I have met individuals, church groups, campus groups and businesses that have made it a priority to help those impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
From the moment Katrina first made landfall the Madison community has mobilized to secure housing for displaced New Orleans residents, transport much-needed supplies and volunteers to the impacted areas, and educate the public about the situation. These efforts have not waned and have in fact strengthened since the initial disaster. From individual and business donations to formalized programs within institutions of higher learning, Madison has been at the forefront of the recovery effort. It is a common occurrence to encounter Madisonians here and in New Orleans who have donated their time and money to help those who endured structural damage to their homes and personal trauma.
Madison is a community that is able to reach out to others in a time of need. This care and compassion deserves to be recognized.
