Daniel Hanson: Depressing July Fourth ahead

Dear Editor:

Is there anything we can do to keep us out of the Bush-Cheney soup before they leave office?

I fear for the youth of our country and an ever-deepening military fiasco. How real is a draft?

How real is $400 a barrel oil if Iran is attacked?

I would not like going back to the MAD (mutual assured destruction) of the Cold War, but it would be much better than a further mess of the Middle East due to Cheney-Bush arrogance.

And lily-livered Congress with impeachment off the table -- well, you are terrible "enablers" of a tragic policy.

And we the American people, at least 50 percent who are apathetic nonvoters. Pogo was right: "We have met the enemy and it is us!"

For shame! What a depressing Fourth of July is ahead.
