Dear Editor: I guess my memory is failing me. Fifty-two years ago, when I bought my first car, a beautiful '49 Studebaker, I got 45 miles to the gallon. No big deal, and it was a great car. Later I bought a '51 Studebaker, and got similar mileage. Then I bought an AMC Alliance and got 44 mpg. Now I am driving a 2000 Chrysler six-cylinder and still get 27 mpg.
I was so surprised when I watched TV the other day and was informed that a four-cylinder car gets "good" gas mileage at 22 or 24 mpg. Is my memory slipping, or could it be that I am hearing propaganda?
Matt Lauer just agreed happily with the guy. I guess the manufacturers think that if they lie to us long enough, we will believe them. I want to buy another car but won't be satisfied unless I get 50 or 60 mpg, with some oomph. I know the technology is there. Get it to me, please. You did previously.
