Dear Editor:
A town hall meeting is being planned Tuesday, July 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lowell Hall, 610 Langdon St., to address serious concerns about the Iran crisis.
We are becoming extremely anxious about an imminent attack on Iran as President Bush continues his rhetoric, stating "all options are on the table." As those in the administration continue to advocate a military strike versus peaceful conflict resolution, many prominent and knowledgeable people express alarm.
In June Bush met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. After the meeting, Olmert said, "George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on that matter before the end of his term in the White House."
We all know now that Bush is feeding us lies about the need to go to war with Iran, just as he did about the need to go to war with Iraq. But now Congress is taking action to make things even worse. The House is considering a resolution (H. Con. Res. 362) that could effectively demand a blockade against Iran -- an act of war. Rep. Steve Kagan and Rep. Ron Kind from Wisconsin have both signed on to this resolution.
People around the country are starting to mobilize for action. The purpose of the Madison meeting will be for education, and to take positive steps that will lead to action. Local experts will talk briefly about the history of U.S. relations with Iran, Middle East dynamics, and nuclear issues. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and then we will discuss what we can do to prevent a war with Iran.
Joy First
