John Anderson: Obama fudges role in welfare reform

Dear Editor:

During the primaries when Hillary Clinton fabricated her arrival under heavy fire at an airport in Bosnia, the news media took her to task when it was revealed that nothing of the sort actually happened.

When Barack Obama said that he was instrumental and took credit for welfare reform in Illinois while he was in the state Senate, proclaiming an 80 percent reduction in the welfare rolls, hardly anyone in the media batted an eye. In fact he opposed the 1996 federal welfare reform act. The Illinois law for which he takes credit was merely the local implementing law the state was required to pass, and it did unanimously.
