Ultimate Frisbee: Wisconsin men repeat as national champs

The Hodags did it again. And this time, they got some revenge in the process.

The University of Wisconsin men's Ultimate Frisbee team repeated as national champions, downing Florida 15-9 Sunday in the title game of the UPA College Ultimate Open Championships in Boulder, Colo.

Florida had beaten the Hodags 14-13 in a regular-season meeting in Austin, Texas. But UW, which has nine outgoing seniors and grad students, turned the tables when it mattered, relying on a tenacious defensive attack that produced four turnovers in windy conditions.

The 2008 championship match will be televised June 8 at 7 p.m. Central time on CBS College Sports Television.

In all, the Hodags went 6-0 at nationals, outscoring their foes by a combined score of 75-44. Only one opponent scored more than 10 points against Wisconsin -- Stanford, the first obstacle in pool play had 13.

UW's path also included victories over Pittsburgh, Arizona, Harvard and Colorado, the team the Hodags defeated for the title last year.

Ultimate is a club sport at Wisconsin, meaning it receives no recognition or financial assistance from the athletic department. Team members are responsible for covering costs for travel, jerseys and other essentials.

The UW women's team, the Bella Donnas, lost to California-Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals of the Women's Championship Saturday afternoon.
