AREA CHAMPIONS

Boys high jump

Madison La Follette junior Chris Redman won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches. Redman entered the meet tied with the No. 7 seed after qualifying for state with a jump of 6-4. The Big Eight Conference runner-up, he was third at the Holmen sectional.

Girls high jump

Janesville Parker junior Shelby Demos outdueled Watertown senior Lindsay Schwartz and Verona junior Eva Greenwalt for the state title. Demos won with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches. She also won Burlington sectional, Janesville Parker regional and Big Eight Conference titles in the event

Girls 3,200-meter relay -- final

Winner: Running in the first heat, 13th seeded Mukwonago knocked 15 seconds off its sectional time, winning in 9 minutes, 26.40 seconds.

Area placewinners: Running in the second heat, Oregon set a school-record with a tme of 9:27.36 to finish third overall. The team of sophomores Morgan Engelhart and Rachel Walsh, junior Annie Heifner and senior Megan Beers finished just 18/100ths of a second behind runner-up Onalaska, which used a strong kick by junior Jamie Hill to edge out the Panthers for second-place in 9:27.18.

Notable: Oregon's Engelhart and Beers will both compete in the 800 and Beers will also run in the 1,600 on Saturday. The Madison West quartet of junior Kirkley Doyle and seniors Laurel Ohm, Ruth Davis and Emily Keepman finished 18th out of 24 teams overall in 9:49.52.

Girls 100-meter high hurdles -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Watertown senior Lindsay Schwartz (15.02 seconds) and sophomore Madeline Emme (15.36) were the top-two fastest qualifiers for Saturday's finals.

Area qualifiers: Janesville Parker junior Shelby Demos ran the seventh-fastest time in 15.69.

Notable: Also running from the area was Verona senior Niki Parker, who was 21st overall in 16.82.

Boys 110-meter high hurdles -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Monona Grove senior Kendric Smith led the way with a time of 14.73.

Notable: Other area runners who competed in the prelims but did not qualify for Saturday's finals include: Madison Memorial sophomore Lechein Neblett (15.36), Verona junior Garrett O'Brien (15.91) and DeForest senior Ryan Fosler (16.12). The cutoff for the final qualifying spot was 15.22.

Girls 100-meter dash - prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee Bradley Tech junior Jasmyn Hudgins in 12.10 seconds.

Notable: There were no area qualifiers who advanced to Saturday's finals. Madison Memorial senior Tiffany Jones (12.75) and Beloit Memorial sophomore Felicia Carlson (12.90) finished 10th and 13th, respectively overall. The final cut-off was 12.71, run by La Crosse Logan's Emily Worden.

Boys 100-meter dash -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee Bradley Tech senior Marcus Jenkins (11.00).

Area qualifiers: Madison West sophomore Armani Davis was sixth in 11.26 and Portage senior Tony Ryan was ninth (11.33) to qualify for Saturday's finals.

Notable: Also competing but not advancing to the finals were: Milton junior Hank Meivor (11.53), Madison Memorial senior Derek Nkemnji (11.55) and Stoughton freshman Darius Tribble (11.69).

Boys 1,600-meter run - finals

Winner: Port Washington senior Jack Hackett (4:16.71) nipped Muskego senior Keegan Calmes (4:16.74).

Area placewinners: Madison La Follette junior Alex Brill finished sixth in 4:18.79.

Notable: Other area runners and their finishes included: Madison La Follette senior Andy Buchanan, 10th in 4:20.95; Fort Atkinson junior Spencer Agnew, 12th in 4:23.14; and Fort Atkinson senior Jake Burow, 15th in 4:27.44.

Girls 800-meter relay -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: The Milwaukee Bradley Tech quartet of freshman Dezerea Bryant and juniors Sharonda York, Symona Gregory and Jasmyn Hudgins set a state record with a qualfying time of 1:40.11. That erased the previous state record of 1:41.49 set by Milwaukee Vincent in 2006.

Area qualifiers: Middleton was fifth in 1:44.31. The Cardinals relay included freshman Erin McCauley, senior Katie Gaab and sophomores Laura McGinnis and Melissa Landsee.

Watertown was ninth in 1:45.01. The Goslings relay included: freshman Alyssa Harmes and sophomores Jenna Schwartz, Jodi Bellas and Madeline Emme.

Notable: Sun Prairie's relay of junior Melissa Assalone, sophomores Latifah Bryant and Lizzie Bartow and junior Tiffany Kepney was 11th in 1:45.63. The Cardinals missed qualifying for Saturday's finals by 62/100s of a second.

Also competing but not qualifying for the finals were: Madison La Follette, 17th in 1:47.44; Janesville Parker, 18th in 1:48.05; and Beloit Memorial, 25th in 1:49.76.

Boys 800-meter relay -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: The Milwaukee Vincent quartet of senior Justin Rogers, sophomore Berevon Wyatt, senior Dominic Blockmon and junior Centrell Minter set a state record with a qualfying time of 1:27.29. That erased the previous state record of 1:28.15 set by Racine Case in 1983.

Notable: There were no area qualifiers for Saturday's finals. Other area relays that competed in the prelims and their finishes were: Beaver Dam, 14th in 1:31.28; Milton, 18th in 1:31.69; Madison Memorial, 19th in 1:31.98; Waunakee, 21st in 1:32.30; Janesville Parker, 23rd in 1:32.99; and Verona, which was disqualified.

Girls 400-meter dash - prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee Riverside senior Sharay Hale (56.11).

Area qualifiers: Madison Memorial junior Lauren Rock was seventh in 59.21 and Sauk Prairie sophomore Nicole Ballweg was ninth in 59.35.

Notable: Janesville Craig senior Nicollette Scieszinski was 17th in 1:00.94 but did not qualify for the finals.

Boys 400-meter dash -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: DeForest junior Drew Simmons is seeded first in the finals after posting a 48.91.

Notable: Madison East junior Quinn Schwellinger was 21st in 51.14 and Madison West sophomore Armani Davis was 22nd in 51.54. Both failed to qualify for the finals.

Girls 400-meter relay - prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee King relay of juniors Shalesa Smith and Uniqua Taylor, senior Brandi Dupree and junior Chanel Franklin finished in 48.46.

Area qualifiers: Beloit Memorial was fourth in 49.43. The Purple Knights' foursome included: junior Jessica Triplett and sophomores Camilla Bittorf, Laurisha Rosario and Felicia Carlson.

Middleton was seventh in 49.75. The Cardinals' quartete included: senior Katie Gaab, sophomore Melissa Landsee, senior Eileen Walz and sophomore Laura McGinnis.

Notable: Also competing but not qualifying for the finals were: Sun Prairie, 13th in 50.30 and Verona, 23rd in 53.21.

Boys 400-meter relay -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: The Schofield D.C. Everest quartet of seniors Shawn Willette and Dave Pergande, junior Matt Kerswill and senior Jordan Hoekstra earned the top seed in the finals with a finish in 42.56 seconds.

Area qualfiers: Beaver Dam was fifth in 43.62. The Golden Beavers quartet included: senior Joseph Salazar, junior Jacob Kenning, senior Trevor North and junior Devin Kellenberger.

Notable: Waunakee's foursome of senior Spencer Radel, juniors Andrew Weber and Aaron McDonough and senior Rakeem Johnson was 10th in 43.96, missing out on the last berth in the state finals by 8/100ths of a second.

Also competing but not qualifying for the finals were: Verona, 11th in 44.13; Madison Memorial, 14th in 44.19; and Beloit Memorial, 22nd in 44.78.

Girls 300-meter hurdles -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Watertown senior Lindsay Schwartz was the top seed with a time of 45.16 seconds. She was the only area qualifier

Notable: Other area competitors who did not advance to the finals include: Fort Atkinson junior Kim LeRoy (19th in 49.72) and Middleton freshman Erin McCauley (23rd in 50.39).

Boys 300-meter hurdles -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee Marshall/Milwaukee School of Languages senior Zachary Sharkey-Ketner is the top seed for the finals (38.54 seconds).

Area qualifiers: There were no area qualifiers. However, Madison Memorial sophomore Lechein Neblett was 10th in 40.18, finishing just 2/100ths of a second behind ninth-place finisher Nathan Kelly of Ashwaubenon, who earned the last berth in the finals.

Notable: Other area competitors who did not make the finals include: Verona junior Garrett O'Brien (22nd in 42.99); Madison West junior Emerson Sample (23rd in 43.40) and Sun Prairie senior Bart Mestelle (24th in 44.05).

Boys 800-meter run -- finals

Winner: Waukesha West senior Erik Sowinski finished in 1 minute, 54.29 seconds to hold off runnerup Kyle Winter of Kettle Moraine (1:55.33).

Area placewinners: Middleton senior Caleb Fisher, who was 10th in 1:57.92, was the top area finisher.

Notable: Other area finishers included Madison Memorial senior Aaron Noltemeyer, who was 13th in 1:58.24; Verona senior Lars Mattison, who was 20th in 2:00.87; and Madison La Follette senior Andy Buchanan, who was 23rd in 2:01.96.

Girls 200-meter dash -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Brookfield Central freshman Chiders Obasih finished in 24.91 seconds to earn the top seed in the finals.

Area qualifiers: Madison Memorial and University of Wisconsin recruit Tiffany Jones advanced to the finals after finishing sixth in 25.48.

Notable: Also competing but not advancing to the finals were Sauk Prairie junior Jennifer Kippley (15th in 26.79) and Oregon sophomore Chelsea Williams (23rd in 27.74).

Boys 200-meter dash -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee Vincent junior Centrell Minter posted a time of 21.85 to earn the top seed in the finals.

Area qualifiers: DeForest junior Drew Simmons earned the last berth in the finals with a ninth-place finish in 22.66 seconds. He earlier earned the top seed in the 400.

Notable: Madison Memorial junior Quentin Badger was 11th in 22.68 and did not qualify for the finals.

Girls 3,200-meter run -- finals

Winner: Hudson senior Katie Cumming defended her title by winning the event in a time of 10 minutes, 53.03 seconds.

Area placewinners: Baraboo junior Ashley Schoenoff was fifth in 11:14.27 and Stoughton junior Kiah Ehrke was seventh in 11:18.29.

Notable: Fort Atkinson junior Micaela Magsamen was 12th in 11:31.67. Sauk Prairie freshman Melanie Ramsey finished 23rd in 12:33.76.

Girls 1,600-meter relay -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Milwaukee King's quartet of senior Beonca Mitchell, junior Uniqua Taylor, sophomore Kiara Giles and senior Brandi Dupree earned the top seed with a time of 3 minutes, 59.67 seconds.

Area qualifiers: Sauk Prairie was third in 4:00.87. The Eagles' relay included juniors Jennifer Kippley and Kelsey Nonn, senior Hannah Hubanks and sophomore Nicole Ballweg.

Middleton was ninth in 4:03.62. The Cardinals' foursome included senior Eileen Walz, sophomore Laura McGinnis and juniors Maggie Bollig and Kayla Beckwith.

Notable: Bollig will also compete in the 800 and 1,600 on Saturday for the Cardinals.

Also competing in the relay but did not advance to the finals on Saturday were Sun Prairie (13th in 4:07.65) and Verona (18th in 4:09.99). 

Boys 1,600-meter relay -- prelims

Fastest qualifier: Kettle Moraine earned the top seed with a finish of 3 minutes, 22.30 seconds. The Lasers' quartet included juniors Vince Tumbleson, Steve Perinovic, Kyle Winter and Tom Wenzler.

Area qualifiers: There were no area qualifiers. Baraboo was the area's top finisher in 3:25.28. The Thunderbirds foursome included: seniors Dan Pfaff and Michael Kohnert, sophomore Jake Bachman and senior David Kohnert.

Notable: Other area teams that competed but didn't advance to the finals were: Verona (14th in 3:26.44) and Sun Prairie (23rd in 3:31.05).

Boys high jump -- finals

Winner: Madison La Follette junior Chris Redman won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches.

Area placewinners: Janesville Parker senior Riley Grafft was fifth (6-6), while Monona Grove senior Travis Morehouse was sixth (6-4).

Notable: Redman was the No. 7 seed after qualifying for state with a jump of 6-4. The runner-up at the Big Eight Conference meet, he was third at the Holmen sectional.

The other area finisher included Waunakee freshman Ross Maly (11th at 6-4). Competing in the event but failed to make a height were Beaver Dam junior Sean Conway, Janesville Craig junior JoJo Pregont and Portage senior Kyle Roche. 

Girls discus -- finals

Winner: Seymour sophomore Jessica Maroszek with a throw of 144 feet, 9 inches. 

Area placewinners: Baraboo junior Lacey Craker was second (137-5), Monona Grove sophomore Angela Boushea was third (128-6), Verona junior Amanda Spencer was seventh (116-3) and Madison Memorial senior Lisa Brown was eighth (114-11).

Notable: All four area competitors placed in the top eight.

Girls high jump -- finals

Winner: Janesville Parker junior Shelby Demos outdueled Watertown senior Lindsay Schwartz and Verona junior Eva Greenwalt for the title. Demos won with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.

Area placewinners: Schwartz was second with a leap of 5-5. She edged out Greenwalt, who also reached 5-5 but had more misses. Verona freshman Brooke Richardson made it four area finishers in the top five when she tied for fifth with a jump of 5-2.

Notable: Other area competitors included: Oregon junior Kari Hanson (tied for 18th at 5-0); Sauk Prairie junior Chantel McConville (21st at 5-0); and Reedsburg junior TeAnn Harms (tied for 22nd at 4-10).

Boys long jump -- finals

Winner: Milwaukee Bradley Tech senior Marcus Jenkins defended his title, winning with a leap of 24 feet, 4 inches.

Area placewinners: Watertown senior Dylan Keller was eighth with a jump of 21-8.

Other area finishers were: Janesville Craig junior JoJo Pregont (tied for 15th, 20-8 3/4) and Monona Grove sophomore Tray Hammonds (19th, 20-5 1/4).

Notable: Jenkins had the best long jump in state history on May 9 (25 feet, 2 1/4 inches) but the official state record must be recorded at state. So Larry Franklin, who set the record for Madison Central High School in 1965, still holds the official record of 25 feet, 3/4 inch.

Jenkins, who said he has narrowed his choice of colleges to Oklahoma, Wisconsin and LSU, said he wanted the state record but will settle for the repeat title.

"I tweaked my hamstring on my third jump in prelims," he said. "I decided just to get the win. I have to move on and get ready for my next challenges in college."

Girls pole vault -- finals

Winner: Ashwaubenon junior Melissa Flucke won the title with a vault of 11 feet, 6 inches.

Area placewinners: Sauk Prairie junior Chantel McConville and Madison East senior Lindsey Parker tied for fifth place (10 feet). 

Notable: Madison La Follette senior Brea Imse competed but didn't make height.

Boys shot put -- finals

Winner: Kettle Moraine senior Jared Hassin won the event by nearly two feet with a toss of 59 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Runner-up Evan Moore of Racine Park finished with a throw of 57-11 1/2.

Area placewinners: Madison Memorial senior Devin Mahaffey was sixth (53-9 1/4).

Notable: Other area finishers included Janesville Craig senior Gregory Pedersen (12th, 52-1 1/2), Janesville Parker senior D'Merius Holbrook (20th, 47-8 1/2) and Janesville Parker senior Harold Lloyd (24th, 45-3 3/4).

Girls triple jump -- finals

Winner: Greenfield senior Julie Hebert won with a leap of 37 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Area placewinners: There were no area placewinners.

Notable: Sun Prairie senior Brittany Gibbs was 17th with a throw of 33-10 3/4.
