Running/Walking

Basketball

MADISON WEST LITTLE LEAGUE Registration is underway for the 2009 season. Boys and girls ages eight through 16 who live in the West or Memorial high school attendance areas are encouraged to sign up for baseball or softball. MATC SPRING TRAINING A four-week camp for players ages seven through 18 held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting Feb. 8 and ending March 1 at MATC Truax Campus H. MCFARLAND SPRING TRAINING Registration is underway for a six-week training camp, in conjunction with Midwest Baseball Academy, for players in grades one through 12 from Feb. 21 through March 28 at McFarland High School. WAUNAKEE SPRING TRAINING Registration is underway for Waunakee High School's six-week spring training baseball program for players in grades one through 12 from Feb. 8 through March 22. Local high school and college coaches will direct the program in conjunction with Midwest Baseball Academy. Sessions are offered in advanced hitting, pitching and catching. Space is limited. Youth Basketball Clinic: This is a skills and sportsmanship clinic for boys and girls in grades three through five held on Saturdays from Feb. 21 through April 4 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Toki Middle School, 5606 Russett Rd. Cost: $30 for residents in the Madison School District; $45 for non-residents. Information: 608-204-3026 or visit www.mscr.org/programs 

Downhill Skiing: Open and Instruction at Devils Head, Merrimac (Includes Snow Boarding): Lessons for beginner to intermediate skiers. Cost: $65 and include lift ticket costs. Equipment rentals are an additional $25.  Adapted sleds are available for people with physical disabilities, including outriggers for amputees. Bussing from East High School is available for an extra $25.

     * Feb. 10, 17 & 24: For participants in grades seven and up from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Downhill Skiing at Tyrol Basin: For ages eight and up. Beginner ski lessons are available from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with open skiing and snowboarding until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays through March 5. Cost: $30 per night and includes all-area lift ticket, equipment and beginner group lesson.  Intermediate to advanced lessons are also available for an additional $15.  

Cross Country Ski Lessons: Beginning to advanced lessons in classic style only held at Odana Golf Course, 4635 Odana Rd. Equipment rentals available: Adult: $10/first hr; $5 each additional; Youth: $5/hr.  Participants also pay trail user fee at site: $6 per day or $20 seasonal.  Need 6 inches of snow.       

Core Crunch: This conditioning class focuses on defining and toning the abdominal muscles while strengthening the lower back.  Held on Thursdays, through March 5, 12-12:30 p.m. at Shorewood Elementary, 1105 Shorewood Blvd. Cost: $20. 

Hatha Yoga: This style of yoga combines yoga postures with deep breathing to promote flexibility, balance, relaxation and muscle strength.  Held on Thursdays through March 5, 9:45-10:45 a.m. at Shorewood Community Center, 901 Swathmore Ct. Cost: $40.

Tai Chi: This Yang style short form emphasizes effective body mechanics, alignment, breathing and the interplay of strength and relaxation.  Held on Tuesdays through May 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Goodman Community Center, 149 Waubesa St.  Cost. $95.

Strength & Stretch: focuses on improving core stability, strength, balance and flexibility. Held on Mondays through March 2, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lussier Community Education Center, 55 S. Gammon Rd.  Cost: $28.

Zumba: a fusion of Latin and international music - dance themes that create a dynamic, effective fitness system.  Held on Thursdays through March 5, 6-7 p.m., at the Lussier Community Education Center. Cost: $28. Also held Thursdays through March 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 11 a.m. to noon at Shorewood Elementary. Cost: $40.

MSCR adaptive sports

     * Walking Club: Ages eight to adult. Cost: $30.
     * Water Walking: Exercise on an individual basis, not a guided class. Best for non-swimmers who would benefit from a warm water pool. Ages 18 and up. Summer sessions held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7:30-8:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon. Cost: $55 per class.

SIERRA CLUB OUTINGS This group holds free outdoor events open to members and the general public.

     *Feb. 28: Cross country skiing for beginners and advanced skiers at Pleasant View Golf Course, 4279 Pleasant View Rd. Meet at 10 a.m. near the trailhead and ski for approximately two hours.
