Each day during the Beijing Games, The Capital Times will update how Wisconsin's Olympians are doing and highlight some upcoming events.
Madison native Lindsay Tarpley and Whitefish Bay resident Kate Markgraf are into the semifinals of the women's soccer competition, but it took the Americans extra time to get there.
Natasha Kai headed home a goal in the 101st minute to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Canada in Friday's quarterfinals. The game was delayed for one hour and 40 minutes in the first half because of lightning.
Markgraf played all 120 minutes, while Tarpley left for a substitute in the 82nd minute.
The Americans play the Japan, a 2-0 over China, in Monday's semifinals.
Former University of Wisconsin athlete Amy Vermeulen was an alternate on the Canadian team and did not play in the Olympics.
Milwaukee's Garrett Weber-Gale didn't make it through to the 50-meter freestyle final, but he did come back about nine hours later and anchor the American's 400-meter medley relay to the best time in qualifying.
Weber-Gale brought home the freestyle portion in 47.96 seconds to help set up Michael Phelps for his final chance at a gold medal in Sunday's final.
In the 50 free semifinals, Weber-Gale was sixth in his heat and 13th overall at 22.08 seconds. That was 0.32 seconds slower than the last qualifying time.
Nashotah's Sally Barkow and the American Yngling sailing crew fell to fourth in the overall standings after a 10th-place finish in the eighth race in the preliminary series. The ninth and 10th races, which were also scheduled for Friday after postponements, were abandoned.
The Americans — Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi — have 43 points, one point behind third-place Greece, 20 points behind second-place the Netherlands and 21 points behind leader Britain.
The medal race, where points count double, is scheduled for Saturday.
Milwaukee's Beezie Madden helped the United States to first place after the first team qualifier in equestrian's jumping competition.
Riding a horse named Authentic, Madden did not record any penalties, and the Americans were able to toss out the one penalty they received for a net total of zero.
The event also counted as the first individual qualifier, and Madden was one of 13 riders to go without a penalty.
