We asked five burning questions heading into Saturday night's Big Ten Conference game between the University of Wisconsin football team and No. 6 Penn State at Camp Randall Stadium.
We got some answers during the Badgers' 48-7 loss to the Nittany Lions -- none of them good, as far as UW was concerned.
Pregame outlook: UW coach Bret Bielema's comments regarding Evridge's struggles with accuracy got a lot of play this week in the media and on fan message boards. Bielema also made it clear that personnel changes may be in order if some players don't improve their performance.
So what does Evridge need to do to keep his job? Hold onto the ball, for starters. He's turned the ball over six times (three fumbles, three interceptions) in two games. The Badgers don't need Evridge to be great. Something like this stat line -- 16-of-25 for 180 yards with a touchdown -- would do the trick. And no turnovers, of course.
Answer: It wouldn't be shocking to see Dustin Sherer in the starting lineup next Saturday at Iowa. Evridge completed 2 of 10 passes for 50 yards and an interception. He did make some plays with his legs, including a 5-yard touchdown run, but he also had a costly fumble that led to a Penn State touchdown just before halftime.
Evridge was benched in the third quarter in favor of Sherer, who was 9 of 17 for 115 yards and an interception, and also fumbled, while playing with the game out of reach.
Pregame outlook: It's been more than five years since an opponent returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Badgers, but it'll be interesting to see if Bielema, who's in charge of UW's special teams, has anything special planned to keep the ball out of Williams' hands. The senior has returned two kickoffs (out of 10) for touchdowns this season and is third nationally with an average of 33.4 yards per return. UW ranks 48th nationally in kickoff return yardage defense at 20.1 yards per return.
Answer: One way to avoid kicking off to Williams is to avoid kicking off at all. The Badgers' lack of scores meant they only had two kickoffs; one went for a touchback and the other was returned by Chaz Powell for 24 yards.
Williams did make his mark with a 63-yard punt return for a score in the second quarter.
Pregame outlook: Expect Clay's role to expand even more this week after he carried the ball 10 times for 69 yards last week. Hill had 16 carries for 63 yards. Don't be surprised if the distribution of carries is closer to 50/50 -- if not tilted in Clay's favor -- against the Nittany Lions. One stat to note: Hill has gone 40 carries without an explosive run, which is defined as 12 or more yards.
Answer: Hill finished with 15 yards for 58 yards, while Clay had 10 carries for 43 yards. The distribution of carries is skewed because UW was playing from behind almost the entire game.
Pregame outlook: Remember when the Badgers seemed invincible at home? I already detailed in a blog post earlier this week how the Badgers' 16-game home winning streak wasn't all it was cracked up to be, because only one of those victories came against a ranked opponent. Still, losing home games on consecutive Saturdays -- both at night, no less -- would be a shocking development for this program. The last time the Badgers lost back-to-back home games was 2002.
