Area swimmers, divers take top state honors

Area athletes Ruby Martin, Ian Bakk, Kylie Rosenstock and Morgan Hearn received top billing in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association awards, while area coaches swept the state honors.

Martin was named girls Division 1 swimmer of the year and coach Matt Matteson was tabbed boys Division 1 coach of the year after they teamed up to lead Madison East to the WIAA state title. Martin swam on the victorious 200-meter freestyle and medley relays, won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle.

Kyle Rosenstock of Madison West claimed the girls Division 1 diver of the year honor while her friend and training partner Morgan Hearn of Madison Edgewood claimed girls Division 2 honors. Both won WIAA titles.

Bakk was named boys Division 2 swimmer of the year and coach Nick Weiss was honored as boys Division 2 coach of the year in the wake of McFarland's repeat state championship. Bakk swam on the victorious 200 medley relay, won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and helped the Spartans to a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.

Also feted were Krystina Miller of Middleton, who was named the all-divisions girls diving coach of the year; Sue Winckler of DeForest, who was named girls Division 2 coach of the year after leading the Norskies to a second straight WIAA title; and Todd Wuerger of Sauk Prairie-Wisconsin Heights, who was tabbed boys Division 1 coach of the year after guiding his team to a sixth-place finish.
