UW's Stone doesn't get contract extension

No big surprises came out of the University of Wisconsin Athletic Board's meeting to decide personnel issues Friday afternoon.

The Board did not give women's basketball coach Lisa Stone a contract extension, opting instead to maintain her contract. She has three years remaining in her five-year contract.

Stone's Badgers entered the season with great expectations but finished a mediocre 16-14 overall and 9-9 and a tie for seventh place in the Big Ten standings.

Wrestling coach Barry Davis also had his contract maintained. He just finished the first year of a three-year deal that ends in 2010.

Men's hockey coach Mike Eaves and women's hockey coach Mark Johnson each had their contracts extended to 2013 while swimming coach Nick Hansen had his 1-year deal renewed.

Finally, men's basketball coach Bo Ryan had his contract maintained at five years because of an athletic department philosophy to go no farther than five years with any coaches' contracts.

``That philosophy ... is more Barry and department-driven than from the Board,'' said associate athletic director Vince Sweeney.
