UW's Hoeppner sets school record in hammer throw

It was quite a night for Amanda Hoeppner.

The University of Wisconsin junior set the school record in the hammer throw, posted the third-best shot put in program history and recorded a personal best in the discus Friday at the Wisconsin Twilight track and field meet at McClimon Complex.

Hoeppner, a former Lake Mills athlete, won the invitational hammer with a throw of 187 feet, improving her NCAA regional qualifying mark. That broke the record of 184 feet, 3 inches set by Courtney Bauer in 2004.

Hoeppner also won the invitational shot put with a personal best and NCAA regional qualifying throw of 49-2 1/2.

Badgers sophomore Johanne Verpil placed second in the hammer with a personal best throw of 170-6, while sophomore Katherine Dykstra, also a member of the UW volleyball team, placed second in the hammer with a personal best of 40-3 1/4.

Senior Kayla Schultz won the invitational discus with a throw of 154-2 while Hoeppner was second at 148-10. Dykstra finished fifth at 137-8 while Trina Dusso was sixth at 135-10.

In the men's invitational throws, sophomore Rory Linder won the discus with a personal best and regional qualifying throw of 172-4. Freshman Jake Fritz won the shot put with a toss of 54-11 �.

After the first day of the men's decathlon, freshman Alex Bodin sits in third with 3,195 points. Freshman Ian Jansen is in fifth place with 3,183 points while freshman Derek Steinbach is sixth with 3,134 points
after five events.

Bodin finished second in the long jump at 20-10 � and tied Steinbach for second in the high jump at 6-0 �. Steinbach was the top UW finisher in the decathlon shot put, finishing second at 37-5 �. Jansen led the Badgers in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth in 11.66 seconds, and in the 400 meters, placing fifth in 52.88.

The second day of the decathlon at the Wisconsin Twilight begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday while open field events start at 2 p.m. Running events begin at 5 p.m.
