Bill Howard, the only member of all six University of Wisconsin men's hockey NCAA championship teams, is stepping down after 36 years as an assistant coach.

Howard, a longtime volunteer with the program, is credited with developing UW into "Goaltender U." through his work with a series of accomplished backstops that includes Julian Baretta, Marc Behrend, Dean Anderson, Mike Richter, Curtis Joseph, Duane Derksen, Jim Carey, Kirk Daubenspeck, Graham Melanson and Brian Elliott.

Howard first became associated with the program in 1972, joining the staff of Bob Johnson.

"Iwish to thank all the wonderful support staff, the three head coachesthat I worked for (the late Bob Johnson, Jeff Sauer and Mike Eaves),the past and present administration, all the media personnel, theplayers and specifically all of the great goalies that I had theopportunity to work with and coach over the past four decades," Howard said in a statement released by the university.

"Although this was a long thought out and difficult decision for meand my family to make, their support, thoughts, insight andunderstanding made this decision much easier to make. I am fortunate atthis time to have many other opportunities as a goalie consultant andcoach.

"I still have a great passion for teaching and coaching players andgoalies at all age levels. I therefore am not retiring from coachingbut simply moving in a different direction. It's been a lot of fun, agreat run, and has been very rewarding."

Howard was a member of the coaching staff during championship runs in 1973, 1977 and 1981 under Johnson, in 1983 and 1990 under Sauer, and in 2006 under Eaves.

"Bill Howard has been an invaluable part of the Wisconsin family andtradition for 36 years," Eaves said in a statement. "One constant in life is change and coach Howardfeels that the time is right for this change in his life. We wish himnothing but the best health and success in the future."
