Nader wants name on Wisconsin ballot

Associated Press  —  8/21/2008 3:39 pm

Supporters of independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader are gathering signatures to get him on the November ballot in Wisconsin.

Nader volunteer Briana Nestler says she and others have gathered more than 1,900 of the 2,000 Nader needs to qualify. She says they hope to gather 4,000 before the Sept. 2 deadline to submit the petition.

Nader won 16,390 votes in 2004 out of nearly 3 million cast statewide, or slightly more than half of one percentage point. He did better in 2000, winning 3.6 percent of the vote.

James Twine of Madison was among those who signed the petition. He says he's a supporter of Republican John McCain and wants Nader on the ballot to drain votes from Democrat Barack Obama.
