The town of Madison has received two federal grants to help clean up former landfills in the southern part of the town.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced the grants Tuesday in Milwaukee.

The town will receive $200,000 for environmental testing on a 62-acre site that used to be part of two landfills and is now being developed as the Novation Technology Campus, EPA officials said.
<
"It's been vacant for a long time and pretty much undevelopable," said Rick Rose, town public works director. "After development in addition to creating jobs .
.. it would also increase the tax base."
<A $1 million grant will be used to create a revolving loan fund so that the town can provide loans or grants to others trying to clean up brownfields.
<
Brownfields are abandoned or under-used industrial and commercial sites where redevelopment is difficult because of possible environmental contamination. The EPA estimates there are 450,000 brownfields in the United States.

On Tuesday, the EPA announced 265 grants worth $75.4 million to communities or agencies in 42 states, Puerto Rico and five Native American tribes.
