  • Political experience: Elected to the Senate in a 1988 special election; re-elected since 1990. Co-chairman of the powerful Joint Finance Committee, 1996-present. Recipient of numerous awards from environmental, veterans and other groups. Announced in May he was giving up race for attorney general after his legal bills in the "John Doe" investigation were made public.
