Burke's lawyers' response
11:09 AM 6/26/02

indent Lawyers for state Sen. Brian Burke, D-Milwaukee, released this statement Wednesday afternoon:
indent"Senator Brian Burke's vigorous defense of the charges against him will ultimately demonstrate that he has done nothing wrong.
indent"While we are gratified that the public will finally have an opportunity to see what the Dane County district attorney's office has been doing in secret for almost a year, we are surprised by the timing of these charges because we have been engaged in an on-going, serious dialogue with the district attorney himself regarding what we believe are obvious and serious conflicts of interest on the part of both the Milwaukee County and Dane County district attorneys' offices.
indent"While we intend to explore these and many other serious problems with this investigation and these charges, the main point of the senator's defense will be to show the public he has faithfully and honestly served for 14 years (and) that he has done nothing wrong.
indent"On our advice, Sen. Burke will be unavailable for comment until further notice. . . . "
