Investigation at a glance
10:47 AM 10/16/02

Key developments Wednesday in the ongoing caucus investigation:

  • Charges pending: Court records and attorneys indicate Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, D-Madison, will be charged with trading campaign contributions for legislative action.

  • Prosecutor stays: Attorneys for Chvala fail to persuade a judge to remove Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann as prosecutor in the case against Chvala because of an alleged conflict of interest.

  • Pressure to resign: Four Democratic senators, some loyal to Chvala in the past, call for him to resign his leadership post.

  • More to come? Top Republican lawmakers decline to comment until specific charges against Chvala are revealed. Democrats predict Republican leaders will face charges next.
