Yesterday marked the first flight of Pet Airways, the first airline just for pets, and they're already booked solid for the next two months. Instead of flying as checked bags in the cargo hold of a commercial plane, pets ride in carriers in the main cabin of a modified plane, and "Pet Attendants" check on them every 15 minutes. Pet Airways currently offers flights between Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Denver, and Los Angeles, and cross-country flights include an overnight stop with play time and dinner.
When you book a flight on Pet Airway's web site, they ask for the height and weight of your pet, and whether you have a dog or a cat - the drop-down list also includes reptile, bird, or pig, with an enticing "coming soon" note. (Insert your own "when pigs fly" joke here.)
I've never had to fly with my dog, but I know that I would be uncomfortable having him down in the hold, so this seems like an interesting alternative (and comparable to the cost of taking a dog on a commerical flight). The only thing Jake wants to know is what they're serving in first class - kibble or chicken?
