CHICAGO -- Been killing some time in the press box waiting for the game to begin by reading the newspaper clip file provided by the Cubs public relations department.
As one can imagine, many of the stories for opening day focus on the Cubs chances of breaking that 100 year drought of not winning a World Series. Some of those stories focus on the '69 Cubs, who collapsed down the stretch and lost the NL East to the New York Mets.
"We were the best team in the National League,'' Cubs announcer and '69 third baseman Ron Santo was quoted as saying in one story.
I've heard Santo say this before and it's nothing but revisionist garbage.
Which team played over .700 ball in September of 1969? It wasn't the Cubs.
Which team went on to win the first ever NL playoff series and then beat the Baltimore Orioles, generally acknowledged at the time as the best team in the game, in five games in the series? I don't think it was the Cubs.
Perhaps Santo might want to focus on how a certain third baseman teased the baseball gods by clicking his heels as he came off the field after a win during the season. Remember the adage "Act like you've been there before''? Santo wasn't there then or since.
One thing I do know, it was the best baseball summer I ever had growing up in New York. Thanks, Ronnie.
